The Fred and Doreen Horner Endowment Fund

Fred & Doreen Horner

Before his death, Fred Horner had expressed a desire to build homes for families. He had been inspired by people like Jimmy Carter; he understood the importance of stability for families, and the pride that comes from home ownership.  This was an ideal he had learned from his parents and he had passed down to his own children.

Fred and his wife Doreen had donated to several charities throughout their lives, so the family wanted to help others by establishing a fund with their father’s estate.  In 2004 Doreen and her children Don, Heather and Jane set up an endowment fund with Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon to honour Fred.

“we got to see and feel what we’ve done … we got back much more than we gave”

The family continues to be involved with Habitat. Since 2004, Heather has sponsored a home build, and Jane became a key member of the Family Selection Committee. Doreen passed in 2009, and today our boardroom bears the Horner family name to commemorate the generous gift that continues to touch so many families.

“Giving this money brought our family closer together”, says Jane. “We’ve worked together on different builds and met the families.” When asked about the experience, Jane explains they were fortunate to be in a position to give such a gift. But in the end, “we got to see and feel what we’ve done … we got back much more than we gave.”

Leaving a Bequest to Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon

Bequests left to Habitat for Humanity Saskatoon have a lasting legacy. Each home we build is paid for with an interest-free mortgage. The funds collected from these mortgage payments go back into building more affordable homes in Saskatoon, which then enable even more homes to be built, and so on.

The first donations we collected more than 20 years ago are still helping us build homes this year, and will continue to do so twenty years from now. Leaving a bequest is a fantastic way to establish a lasting legacy and give working families a hand up to a better life.

And remember, 100% of your donation goes towards constructing affordable homes. All of our administrative costs are covered by profits generated by our ReStore.
